I think a half-marathon is an excellent goal. I definitely wouldn't push for Oct, though, because you might overdo it, and then get injured, or just not enjoy the experience as much as you might have otherwise. <BR/><BR/>If your SIL doesn't think the Vegas race is very good, you could check for other races around that same time. Active.com or Runnersworld.com would be good places to start. I think there's a half in Phoenix in January that might work for you.<BR/><BR/>About motivation for weight training, I'm in the same boat. Two years ago (Jan 07) I did the Women's Health Ultimate Fitness Challenge, and it was great, because it was structured and the moves changed every so often. They had something similar for <A HREF="http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitplan" REL="nofollow">2008</A> which I started, but didn't stick with it because I didn't like the moves as much as last year. But they do have online tools that are great, so you might look into it (you do have to "sign up" for a free account with their site- it's no big deal, they don't send you emails if you don't want them).<BR/><BR/>Anyway, sorry to ramble for so long, but hope that helps.
